This week's release of Fedora 9 makes carrying a full-fledged Linux desktop around on a USB drive a three-click affair. Even better, you don't need Linux installed to create it, you can leave the data on your thumb drive untouched, and any files you create or settings you tweak remain in place the next time you boot up.

How did this come to pass? Seriously. I was there? not from the very start but from very close to the beginning. The very first release was Ubuntu 4.10, nicknamed Warty Warthog. I started with the next release, Ubuntu 5.04 (Hoary Hedgehog). My first experience with Ubuntu was not the best. But I came back to Ubuntu. Why?

Several times I?ve been called upon at a moment?s notice to troubleshoot a misbehaving PC system either at work or at a friend?s or relative?s home. Being the ?go to? guy for these sorts of problems is both a curse and a blessing, but I guess that is besides the point.

Fedora 9 is a significant upgrade and packs in a number of new features. Perhaps the best part of Fedora 9 is the new live USB options. After playing with the release candidate for a week or so I?m happy to report that Fedora 9 has made some significant strides and gives Ubuntu a serious run for its money when it comes ot user-friendliness.

The ninth release of Fedora ushers in a number of changes aimed at making the venerable distribution a more newbie-friendly desktop, but longtime users needn't fear a great dumbing down; version 9 packs plenty of power user punch as well.

We ask that libraries immediately embargo the use of Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) on their collections and establish formal policies against it. There are many challenges facing libraries today, but few can be as important as the way they define themselves and their role in our digital age.

Could there be a bigger threat than Linux to Microsoft's OS dominance? If an open-source version of Windows can be developed that is totally compatible with the abundance of Windows drivers?the idea behind ReactOS?then Microsoft will have to go back to work.

Here are some shots from the install. I will not go into detail when it comes to these. One thing that has changed is the encryption option (i did not test this), that allows you to make and install to an encrypted partition.uname -aLinux localhost.localdomain 2.6.25-14.fc9.i686 #1 SMP Thu May 1 06:28:41 EDT 2008 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

You know SELinux is built to be virtually attack-proof, but do you know how the National Security Agency (NSA) accomplish it? Take a closer look at the SELinux kernel architecture, why this is important, and what makes SELinux one of the most secure implementations of Linux available.

Apple may open up its iPhone and iPod touch devices to third-party apps next month, but the chances that Linux users will get invited to the party are slim at best. That hasn't stopped some intrepid hackers from coming up with a better music-syncing solution than the one Mac and Windows users have?a two-way wireless transfer

Los Alamos Computers is now selling laptops, desktops and servers preinstalled with gNewSense, the fully free GNU/Linux distribution. This is even better than what larger companies like Dell and Lenovo have been offering -- and they are also donating a portion of their sales to the Free Software Foundation.

Harald Welte has posted an update on the GPL-compliance case hearing held on May 8. In the end, Skype dropped all of its arguments and gave up its appeal. "This means that the previous court decision is legally binding to Skype, and we have successfully won what has probably been the most lengthy and time consuming case so far."

Ubuntu 8.04 was released last month with highly-anticipated features like PulseAudio, GNOME 2.22, and Wubi. Although this release is a strong incremental improvement over its predecessor, we found some serious bugs that detract from the overall user experience. Ars takes a close look to find out if Hardy Heron raises the bar.

For those watching Compiz-Fusion recently, many folks have been waiting for quite a while for there to be a plugin to replace the cube with a sphere. We got a cylinder, and then a deformed cylinder, and finally the developers have put the code for a sphere together! Thanks onestone! [Please note that this is in the development version only.]
